Residents Can Voice Their Opinion
Columbus, GA, April 10, 2018 -The proposed construction of two roundabouts within a half mile radius has local area citizens in a quandary. There were many unanswered questions at a Public Forum held last night at the Psalmond Rd. Recreation Center with about 35 local residents attending.
The Georgia DOT is proposing to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Macon Rd. (Spur 22) and Beaver Run Rd. Less than a half mile east of that intersection, another roundabout is proposed at the intersection of Lynch Rd/Technology Parkway and Macon Rd. (Hwy 80).
The City of Columbus attended the meeting represented by Pamela Hodge, Deputy City Manager and Donna Newman, Director of Engineering. However, the Georgia DOT representative had an emergency and could not attend. Thus, the many unanswered questions. Many questions that were asked by attendees were referred to the GaDOT.
Roundabouts are a fairly new way of managing traffic and safety at intersections. Citizens want to understand the pros and cons to a roundabout. Ms. Newman estimated that it would take 3-5 years to complete the project
22,500 cars per day pass through the intersection of Lynch Rd./Technology Pkwy. and Hwy. 80. A fatal accident at this intersection last year re-routed and snarled traffic for almost 7 hours. At Spur 22 and Beaver Run Rd., almost 19,000 cars go through the intersection daily.

If this will keep traffic moving at 5 pm it will be great. But it could be a problem when the train is across Technology Pkwy.
